GSM/UMTS versions bound for the old continent

At the beginning of the ongoing year, Sunnyvale-based mobile phone maker Palm released new versions of its webOS-based handsets, the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, both unveiled in the US on the airwaves of Verizon Wireless, and now the phones are bound to make an appearance on the European market. The handsets were also announced to arrive at AT&T in the following months, and it seems that these GSM versions (Verizon has CDMA flavors available for its users) will make it to the old continent too.

According to a recent article on the unwired, the GSM/UMTS versions of the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus have just received approval from the GCF (Global Certification Forum), and both of them come with quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dual band UMTS/HSDPA (but not HSUPA) at 2100/900 MHz. The phones sport model numbers Palm P101UEU and P121UEU, respectively, and based on this and on the connectivity options available with them, they cannot be considered the same handsets that will land at AT&T, it seems.

As most of you might know, the GSM Palm Pre already received GCF certification, and it is currently available for purchase in some European countries, which suggests that the P101UEU could only be the GSM Palm Pre Plus. Moreover, the P121UEU is said to be the European GSM version of the Palm Pixi Plus, as the EU part in model number should stand for Europe, especially since AT&T's Pre Plus and Pixi Plus were approved by FCC as P101UNA and P121UNA, where NA stands for North America, the news site notes.

However, it seems that no additional details on the specifications of the European Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus have been unveiled so far, but one should expect them to include about the same features as the models already available in the US do. Unfortunately, no info on the release date of these phones emerged, nor on the carriers that might bring them to the market, or the price tags they should feature. Even so, the release dates should be near, so stay tuned for more on the matter.
