Sunnyvale-based mobile phone maker Palm seems set to bet a lot on the gaming capabilities the handsets it has delivered to the market with its own webOS platform include. Only a few days ago, the company announced the release of a beta version of the Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) for webOS, and now we learn that the company has showcased Unreal Engine 3 on its platform.

Palm has partnered with Epic Games for the demonstration of Unreal Engine 3 on Palm webOS at the Game Developers Conference this week. The Unreal Engine 3, in case there are some who are not familiar with it, is currently powering the popular Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War from Epic, as well as a wide range of other titles brought to light by other game developers around the world. Developers can download a free edition of Unreal Engine 3, the UDK.

In addition to announcing the demonstration, Palm also revealed that licensees of Unreal Engine 3 are expected to soon be able to start building games for Palm webOS. Moreover, developers will also have the possibility to put together the tools offered by the PDK and by the Unreal Engine 3 so as to deliver compelling game titles to webOS users.

“Earlier this week, Palm announced the public availability of the beta release of the Plug-in Development Kit [PDK] for developers seeking to expand their options for creating apps for Palm webOS phones. Together, the PDK and the Unreal Engine 3 will make it even easier for developers to bring visually rich games to Palm webOS phones,” a recent post on Palm's blog notes.

Those who are not yet familiar with the Plug-In Development Kit (PDK) should know that it has been released as a new component of the webOS SDK, offering developers the possibility to use C and C++, as well as web technologies to deliver new software solutions for Palm handsets. According to Palm, the PDK has been released so as to enable fast porting of C/C++ applications (including those based on OpenGL ES 1.1 or 2.0) to webOS.
