With the new Pre 3 announced and showcased during the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, HP has decided to empty its depots of any remaining Palm Pre 2 stocks. Consequently, they have dropped the price of the smartphone to a mere $29.99 with a new two-year contract.
Palm Pre 2 is currently available at Verizon for $409.99 unlocked or for $49.99 with a new two-year contract, which is $20 more expensive than the new price offered by HP Wireless Central.
Even though the suggested retail price of the device remains the same, $429.99, the subsidized price is one of the lowest available on the market.
Customers living in Canada can take advantage of an even better deal, as the Pre 2 is available for free, after a special $100 discount with a 3-year contract on Rogers. In addition, the device can also be obtained for free with a contract from reseller Wireless Wave.
Pre 2 is one of the last smartphones released by Palm before they were bought by HP and is 100% a Palm product.
The slider smartphone features a full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors support and 320 x 480 pixels resolution.
Its successor, the Pre 3, is expected to be released in Q2 2011, and comes with a slightly larger 3.58-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with a better 480 x 800 pixels resolution.
However, Palm Pre 2's touchscreen is protected by Gorilla glass display, which lowers the chances of it being damaged after taking a fall.
While the Pre 2 is powered by a single 1 GHz processor, the HP Pre 3 boasts a much better 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor, which is complemented by an Adreno 205 GPU.
Palm Pre 2 runs on the webOS 2.0 mobile platform and packs a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and video recording capabilities.
