Let the Blackberry hunt commence!

As the rumors announced, Palm has today launched, together with Microsoft and Verizon Wireless, the Treo 700 model, its first Palm to work with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of Palm OS.

Two years ago, in October 2003, Palm decided to separate its hardware and software departments; a few days ago, PalmSource, the former software division, which was in charge of the OS, was sold to the Japanese company, Access.

Although Palm OS had a great contribution to the success of the PDA devices, the operating system didn't keep up with Symbian and Windows Mobile.

During the launching, Palm made a demonstration of the new device, Treo 700, which will go on sale starting with 2006. Palm presented some changes implemented in the new product, which included faster e-mail and contact list access.

Although acknowledging the superiority of the Windows Mobile 5.0 over Palm OS when it comes to multimedia and extended battery life, Microsoft's OS is slower. This will prevent many users from migrating towards the new equipment. Another potential reproach to be made to Treo 700 is the lack of WiFi support.

Treo 700 has been designed to become the main competitor for ResearchInMotion's device, Blackberry.

Still, before going against Blackberry, Treo 700 will have to win the battle with Motorola Q, a Windows Mobile 5.0 based smartphone due for launch in 2006.
