Friday August 12th will be the day when Sony will officially launch the version 2.00 of the firmware that runs on PSP.

The new firmware was made available to Japanese users last week. This firmware update adds new features for PSP, such as a web browser, improved audio/video support, options for photo sharing and adding background images to the user interface. Beside that, it tweaks numerous other low-level functions.

Sony America said that the as soon as the new firmware "Firmware Upgrade 2.0" will be available users should be able to get it by connecting directly through a wireless access point, via Network Update menu or by using their PCs to download the file from the official US PSP website and transferring it across USB.

When the Japanese update was launched last week Sony indicated that U.S. PSPs users should not upgrade the bios to the 2.0 Japanese version, because this will void the system's warranty. Still, many users have indicated that the Japanese version of firmware works fine and to this point hasn't interfered with the playing of U.S. UMD movies or games.

Sony said that European version of PSP, which will be launched on September 1st, will come with the update pre-installed.
