SOE is helping the PlayStation team make the patching system smoother

Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that it's working alongside the PlayStation team to refine the update process on the PS4 next-gen console, so that patches will no longer occupy a lot of space and take a toll on the bandwidth or traffic of an owner.

The PS4 was released back in November of last year and, since then, its different games have received plenty of big updates or patches that easily weighed in at over 1GB or more.

As you can imagine, free-to-play multiplayer games like DC Universe Online have received a big number of updates and developer Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that it's hearing the complaints from users about the large size of the patches.

"At DCUO, we regularly develop and release new content for the game in free Game Updates and paid DLC Packs. This means there is always something new to play and see in the game, but it also means regular patches for you to download. We wanted to take a moment to address some feedback from players specifically on the PlayStation 4," a representative said on the official forums.

According to the rep, SOE is working with the PlayStation team to change the update system on the new console in order to make sure that patches will be reduced in size.

"You have probably noticed that the download size of updates on PlayStation 4 has been larger than on other platforms. While this is partially due to the higher resolution assets on PlayStation 4, this is also due to differences in the way the platforms work," he explained.

"We know this is an important issue and we are working with the Sony PlayStation Team to both improve the patching process and reduce the size of downloads. Because these improvements are not trivial and because they impact all games on the platform, they are not something that can be completed overnight. We currently expect the launch of the improved patching system around April of this year."

As such, expect patches to be reduced in size for PS4 games in the future.
