Another prediction on the next-gen war

Looks like everyone is making predictions on the next-gen console war. Some say that the Wii will win the overall battle; some state that the PS3 will be the winner with the Xbox 360 trailing behind. So far, the Wii and the 360 have kicked the PS3's ass into oblivion, but according to Research and Markets the PS3 will catch up in the coming years.

In their material, Research and Markets point out that each of the next-gen consoles offers unique features. Sony and Microsoft are aiming for increased functionality while Nintendo looks more into innovative gameplay and "the elusive fun factor".

Research and Markets dubs Sony's next-gen as the winner of the consoles war and, furthermore, they state that the PS3 will sell 75 million units in the following 3 years: "The Sony PlayStation 3 is expected to win the console war in the long term with an install base of around 75 million globally by 2010. The console is not expected to dominate as much as its predecessor, the PS2, due to late launch issues in the PAL region and the early lead of Microsoft's Xbox 360."

I can't agree with them just yet, but maybe in the future, Sony will ramp up PS3 production, so that there won't be anymore shortages. Maybe by the time 2010 comes around there will a PS3 in every household. Another issue might be that the PS3's graphics will not seem so dazzling in 2010, but if we take into consideration the PS2, console launched in 2001 - which is selling like hot cakes - we might say that gamers don't care that much about graphics, but about a vast collection of game titles (and the PS2 has lots of them).
