In order to get people even more excited about today’s release of the PlayStation Vita, Sony has shared some fresh details about the handheld device, including the possibility of supporting games made for other platforms.

The PlayStation Vita is set to be released today, February 22, in North and Latin America, as well as in Europe. Up until now, Sony has revealed all sorts of details about its new console, while showcasing its variety of features.

Some fresh details have now appeared, this time in regards to the Vita’s support for games that have already been launched on other platforms and for video content that has already been purchased by its owners from the PlayStation Store.

According to the Japanese company, PS Vita owners can currently experience games made for the new console, as well as certain PSP titles and PS minis that are available on the PS Store. Support for games that appeared on the PS2 or PS3 is out of the question, although PSone titles could appear at some point in time.

“Users can play supported digital PSP titles and supported minis,” the company said. “In regard to PSone classics titles, we will announce further details when they are ready. PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point.”

The console is also going to support SD video content that was downloaded from the PS Store by its owners, as all they need to do is re-download the videos.

“The PS Vita can play free and premium SD video content. If you purchased premium video content for your PSP, you will be able to access that content on your PS Vita by downloading it again via PlayStation Store.”

Last but not least, Sony also said that, at least for the time being, it was not planning on extending its PlayStation Plus premium subscription service to the PS Vita.

However, the company did promise that more features and upgrades would be made to the Vita through future firmware updates.
