Storage solutions exist in a wide variety on the market, but for those that can come together into configurations with larger capacity and security, PMC created a series of entry-level hardware 6Gb/s SATA/SAS RAID controllers with on-board DRAM cache.

RAID functionality is something that both professional customers and consumers can benefit from, given the higher transfer speeds and better data security.

Still, depending on how good HDDs are, it takes different controllers to let them work at their fullest.

In this case, PMC decided to put together some RAID controllers that can leverage the advantages of 6 Gbps interfaces, those being the latest SAS and SATA.

These controllers have on-board DRAM cache and allow single cards to deliver HBA and hardware RAID functionality affordably.

Named the Series 6E controllers, they accelerate the performance of spinning media and have PCIe x1 or PCIe x4 host interfaces, respectively, which are most suited for servers, industrial applications and workstations.

So far, two controllers exist, one with 4 ports and one with 8 ports, both featuring 128 MB of DDR3-800 memory and the P M8013 SRC 6Gb/s RoC, SAS 2.0 and PCIe 2.0 technologies.

“Having shipped more than 74 million 6Gb/s SAS ports across controllers and expanders, our partners will benefit from the performance and reliability of an industry-proven RAID Series 6E entry-level solution,” said Jared Peters, vice president and general manager, PMC’s Channel Storage Division.

“The Series 6E outperforms software-based HBAs and SATA controllers and is the first true hardware 6Gb/s SATA/SAS RAID controller with on-board DRAM cache for the entry-level market segment with this capability.”

The Series 6E RAID controllers should be available already, for the price of $200 (Adaptec RAID 6405E) and $275 (Adaptec RAID 6805E). Both of them have Intelligent Power Management and streamlined product package sleeves, for reducing waste created by excessive product packaging.
