PETA has harsh words for Lady Gaga’s latest cover and her raw meat “swimsuit”

The latest issue of Vogue Hommes Japan features on the cover a photo of Lady Gaga dressed in nothing but a string of raw meat. PETA has issued a statement to condemn such attitude towards animals.

As we also reported a couple of days ago, Vogue Hommes Japan comes with two different covers for October: one with Gaga’s male alter ego Jo Calderon, and the other with Gaga herself, as a woman.

The latter shows the singer, known for her outlandish outfits, in a “swimsuit” (if you will) made of raw meat, of which PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) doesn’t approve.

“Lady Gaga’s job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk says in a statement cited by DigitalSpy.

“No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal,” the statement further says.

“Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that's the look they were going for, they achieved it,” Newkirk goes on to say.

Perhaps what disappointed PETA the most was the fact that Gaga would consent to do such a photo after saying last year that she hated fur and wouldn’t be caught dead in it.

Based on this statement, the group asked her to front one of its “No Fur” campaign. In this light, Gaga’s latest photo does seem like a slap in the face, some suggest.

All controversy aside, Gaga’s little monsters (her fans, as she likes to call them) should keep an eye out for when the magazine is out, as it also promises a revealing interview with her.

As also noted above, the other version of the same issue of the mag comes with Calderone on the cover and includes an interview that offers insight into the life of the make-believe mechanic.

Calderone is from Sicily, has worked as a mechanic his entire life and dreams of one day having his own car shop.

Jo met Gaga a while back, she being the one who told him he should think of modeling, an activity that he’s considering doing for a while, as he puts away money to launch his own business.

“I met her at a shoot Nick Knight was doing. She’s [expletive] beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, ‘Don’t be baby, you were “born this way”.’ I took her out after. The rest is private ;)” Calderone says in the interview.
