Pro Evolution Soccer is the only soccer franchise that is capable of fighting against the more famous FIFA series from Electronic Arts, and Konami plans to win the battle no matter what. Therefore, the company has just announced that PES 2009 will also be released on Nintendo's Wii console, alongside the already announced versions for PC, PS3, PS2, PSP and Xbox 360. The Wii version will be released in early 2009.

PES 2009 will bring to Nintendo's console the same concept as in the 2008 version, which means that gamers will be able to control both the player with the ball and the teammates around him. However, Konami promises to improve the control methods and deliver the best soccer experience on Wii.

This means that, along with the control mechanics, Konami will revamp the defensive system, offering more control on the fullbacks and more ways to close down attacking threats. Also, a new AI system will be implemented and it promises to bring, overall, a more real soccer experience.

In order to celebrate the announcement of the Wii version, Konami has revealed the identity of the cover athlete for PES 2009, and that's none other than Barcelona's lethal striker, Lionel Messi. There are no announcements regarding a possible multi-format cover, similar to that of last year's game when the UK, Italy or Spain versions had different covers.

"Most modern players are aware of the realism and skill of the PES series," commented Messi on the deal. "It is a game that truly mirrors the pace and control of real football, and as a die-hard fan of the series, I am delighted to be working with Konami on the latest version."

So, until the game gets released, be ready to hear more from the developers and, more important, from Messi. I'm sure some very exciting trailers will follow, so stay tuned!
