Even though slates have been kicking the PC market to the curb, it's not all uniform

While consumer PCs continue to sell less and less because of tablets, it's not all the same on every facet of the industry.

In fact, there are some fields where PCs continue to hold onto the majority of human preference.

According to market research firm Deloitte, personal computers are much more popular and heavily used on college campuses than slates.

“The combination of smartphones and laptops makes the tablet redundant for students,” Deloitte’s Brent Schoenbaum told MarketWatch.

Right now, 82% of college students own a computer and 89% own smartphones, but tablet owners are only 18%.

Even those who own all three are more likely to use the PC than the tablet, unless they're traveling or lounging outside somewhere.

“Unless you’re shooting for a degree in Angry Birds, tablets are a horrible back-to-school purchase,” says Louis Ramirez, senior features writer on DealNews.com.
