PCLinuxOS FullMonty 2014.04, a Linux distribution that integrates a customized version of KDE and that features a unique take on how the desktop should be organized, has been launched.

PCLinuxOS FullMonty 2014.04 is based on KDE 4.12.3, just like the default version of this Linux distribution, but the developers have managed to make an interesting distinction based on what software is currently used.

The operating system comes with six different desktops, and each of them is dedicated to one kind of activity: Internet, Office, Games, Multimedia, Graphics, and System. Each desktop features a number of applications that are just right for that particular activity, which might seem odd at first, but at least this is something different from what the users are getting from other distros.

“FM applies a new concept: activity-focused virtual desktop layout, which is designed to address typical user-needs/tasks, make their life easy, and working on the computer straightforward and fun. So, what does the typical user do with a computer?”

“Check email/internet/chat/IM? Goto desktop 1 and you find all you need directly on the desktop. Office work to do? Goto desktop 2 where you will find LibreOffice, kile, scribus, and so on. Want to play a quick game? Goto desktop 3 and relax with a quick game Want to listen to or convert music, watch/make DVDs, etc? Goto desktop 4 for any multimedia task. Working with images/photos? Goto desktop 5 to scan, post-process, draw, etc. System info, administration, and configuration? All on desktop 6,” reads the official announcement.

If you don't like the integrated KDE 4.12.3 experience, you will be able to download a newer version from the repositories, when it becomes available. Also, you should keep in mind that this is a Live system, which means that you can download the OS and run it to see if you like it, before the actual installation.

Because PCLinuxOS FullMonty 2014.04 is based on KDE and because it integrates so many applications, the system requirements are a little bit higher. Besides a fairly new Intel or AMD processor, you will also need at least 1GB of RAM (you should have 4GB for best performance), 20 GB or more HDD space (especially if you plan to get even more applications), and a capable NVIDIA, AMD, or INTEL GPU that is capable of 3D rendering.

More details about this Linux distribution can be found in the official changelog. You can download PCLinuxOS FullMonty 2014.04 right now from Softpedia.
