After the release of PC/OS 10.1 OpenWorkstation GNOME edition last week, Roberto Dohnert proudly announced yesterday evening, March 11th, the immediate availability of the main edition (with the XFCE desktop environment) of the PC/OS 10.1 OpenWorkstation operating system. Being powered by Linux kernel 2.6.31, this release includes many enhancements and bug fixes over the previous stable release. The next version, PC/OS 11, will be an LTS (Long Term Support) release!

"Upon booting the Live CD/DVD you have to enter a user name and password. The user name is ‘custom,’ leave the password blank and press enter. The Broadcom drivers install automatically, you will not have an option to ‘deactivate’ them upon initial use. You may have to manually enter your network name. With the last release we introduced the Developer Kit and Office Kit which proved popular and they are available for this release as well." - was stated in the official release announcement.

Highlights of PC/OS 10.1:

· Linux Kernel 2.6.31; · OpenOffice.org 3.2; · Firefox 3.5.8; · Amazon MP3 downloader; · Empathy for IM; · GNOME utils 2.28; · GnomeBaker for burning CDs and DVDs; · VLC is now the default video player; · WINE 1.2 is now included; · Google Gears is now included so that Webstation users can access Google Docs and other web apps offline; · New Simplified menu structure; · USB Creator can now be used to create a bootable USB drive; · UI design is now unified with the GNOME release.

About PC/OS:

A derivative of Ubuntu, PC/OS has an XFCE desktop environment that has a layout similar to that of the now-defunct Be operating system. However, this distribution isn't a reimplementation of BeOS, but aims to reach a similar level of simplicity. PC/OS has the Ubuntu restricted extras preinstalled, supporting many multimedia formats out of the box. The XFCE desktop's lower system footprint means that this distribution can work even on older hardware, but can also power newer workstations.
