Kris Moore from the PC-BSD development team announced today the immediate availability of the first maintenance release of PC-BSD 7.0 (Fibonacci Edition). "After much hard work and testing, the PC-BSD Team is happy to announce the availability of PC-BSD 7.0.1, i.e. the first upgrade in the 7 series, with FreeBSD 7.0 under the hood." - said Kris in the official release announcement.

Therefore, PC-BSD users can upgrade their systems today with the new version, which includes KDE 4.1.2, Adobe Flash 9 support, better Wi-Fi support, System Updater improvements and various fixes, an updated Nvidia video driver (177.80), write support for the NTFS file system and much more! But the best part of this release is that it comes now with an x64 Edition, which can be installed on systems with AMD64/EM64T processors.

Here are the changes since PC-BSD 7.0:

· Updated KDE (K Desktop Environment) to version 4.1.2; · Updated the Nvidia graphics driver to version 177.80; · Updated the Wi-Fi tool to support long and very long SSIDs (especially the ones with multiple spaces). It also allows network profiles and it will connect to the best available wireless network; · Added NTFS writing support; · Added a new icon for the KMenu -> System -> Display Setup Wizard; · Added Adobe Flash 9 support for both i386 and amd64 editions; · Added all the KDE l10n packages, so you can easily switch locales and languages; · Repaired various System Updater bugs; · Repaired the sound detection problem for the ALI M5451 PCI audio device; · Repaired the X.org/QEMU problem; · Various other small fixes.

How to upgrade? Just apply the update and reboot your PC-BSD system. Remember that it may take 15-25 minutes to complete (depending on your system's specs).

Being based on the stable version of FreeBSD 7.0, and powered by the popular KDE 4.1 desktop environment, PC-BSD 7.0 will offer you a modern, reliable and fast BSD operating system.
