PC-BSD, a BSD distribution with the goal to be an easy-to-install-and-use desktop operating system based on FreeBSD, is now at version 10 RC5.

According to the developers, this latest image should be the very last one and the next one should be the final version, if nothing important shows up during testing.

“This will likely be our LAST RC before issuing the 10.0-FINAL release in a week or so. Please report any outstanding issues to our bug database!” reads the official announcement.

Also, according to the developers, a number of problems from the previous releases have been fixed and PC-BSD 9.2 users will now be able to upgrade to PC-BSD version 10.0 Release and keep their PBI library.

Unfortunately, there is a problem that prevents users from upgrading from the previous RC4 version to RC5. Due to an ABI change in FreeBSD between RC4 and RC5, you will need to re-install all packages and PBIs after updating to RC5.

In order to upgrade the packages, you will have to enter the following command (this is best done immediately after the upgrade, before rebooting into RC5): pkg-static upgrade –f

Highlights of PC-BSD 10 RC5:

• The newly released FreeBSD 10.0-RC5 has been included; • KMS / AMD driver support has been implemented; • The ISO file is now a hybrid USB file, and can be “dd”ed to a USB media. This means that you will be able to keep any changes you make to the Live system; • A new text-based installer has been added; • A new UEFI loader has been added on the installation media; • Users are now able to select between GRUB/BSD loaders during installation; • New desktops have been added – GNOME 3, Mate (Replaces Gnome2), and Cinnamon.

A complete list of changes and new features can be found in the official announcement. Download PC-BSD 10 RC5 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a development release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.
