PC-BSD, a BSD distribution with the goal to be an easy-to-install-and-use desktop operating system based on FreeBSD, has just reached version 10.0.1 and is now available for download.

According to the developers, the distribution is based on FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE and the initial reaction to the new build has been positive, although some users have complained about certain aspects of the new version.

Any bugs that might have posed any problems have probably been solved with this first point release, which brings quite a few interesting changes and improvements.

If you are a desktop user who is already running PC-BSD 10.0, you can update via Control Panel > Package Manager > Updates. Server users can update via the “pc-updatemanager” utility. If the updates fail for any reason, apply all the system updates again and try once more.

“The first PC-BSD 10.0 quarterly update is upon us, and 10.0.1 is now available. This update includes a number of important bugfixes, as well as newer packages and desktops, such as KDE 4.12.2, Cinnamon 2.0 and more. Work has continued this week on the development of the new PC-BSD mixer although our primary goal this week was to get a bunch of trac tickets fixed, closed, or assigned to someone to take care of them,” reads the official announcement.

Both desktop environments received some improvements, as KDE has been updated to version 4.12.2 and Cinnamon has been updated to version 2.0.

The developer brought Samba up to speed by updating it to version 4.1.4 (although there is a newer and better version already out and you should upgrade again as soon as you have the chance).

Also, the PBI subsystems have received a number of stability improvements, the GRUB loader has been updated fixing issues related to slow or hanging startup (keep in mind that PC-BSD is still using the old GRUB and not GRUB 2.0), and the AppCafe UI has been updated.

The developers brought some improvements to Life-Preserver, which includes “Classic” backup mode and automatic snapshots, updated the control panel with desktop settings buttons, integrated PulseAudio 5.0, improved the video display auto-detection, implemented a number of bugfixes for mouse auto-detection, improved the LDAP and AD support for login manager, and added a lot of other minor bugfixes.

A complete list of changes and new features can be found in the official announcement. Download PC-BSD 10.0.1 right now from Softpedia.
