Apple likely to patch them all as hacker Pod2g prepares public rollout

Famed hacker Joshua Hill, known on the Internet by his Twitter handle p0sixninja, has confirmed to his 130K followers that Pod2g’s next jailbreak will boast a record number of exploits.

“Haha, this next jailbreak is going to have a record number of exploits, all more epic then ever!!!,” reads the latest tweet from p0sixninja.

The news isn’t particularly breaking, but it is known that fellow hacker Pod2g has been burning the midnight oil to find holes in iOS and meticulously create those exploits. Unfortunately, they might all get burned in the next few days.

Pod2g has a poll on his blog where members of the iOS install base can vote on whether to have the jailbreak released now, or whether to wait for iOS 6. The latter scenario would give hackers an immense leg up in the cat-and-mouse game with Apple.

Should Pod2g release the jailbreak now, Apple would instantly close all the holes in the next software update, including iOS 6. In other words, the hackers would most likely need to start from scratch.

“Most likely” because Pod2g has recently announced new progress: “News: a productive week-end. Found 2 big vulnerabilities. 1 kernel land and 1 root land,” reads a recent tweet from the French hacker.

If our understanding is correct, a root vulnerability is particularly important because it allows hackers to create stronger jailbreaks that cannot be thwarted by Apple with an incremental iOS update.

With 22 hours to go until the poll ends, the vote cast is visibily favoring the release of his jailbreak for iOS 5.1. Whether or not the hacker agrees with his followers, he will most likely indulge them by releasing the hack to the public, thus effectively wasting an “epic” number of exploits for a single jailbreak.
