Nokia is the main manufacturer of Symbian S60 mobile phones and has recently announced that over 100 million such devices have been shipped by S60 licensees up to this date.

Built on Symbian OS, the S60 software is the world's leading smartphone software. It was developed by Nokia and licensed by the industry's top mobile device manufacturers.

According to another recent announcement from Nokia, S60 will also be the first software platform to integrate widget support and bring the power of Web technologies onto mobile phones. Creating a more personal Web experience, widgets will enrich mobile browsing. Moreover, S60 makes it east to create and bring web services through standards-based technologies like Ajax, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.

And talking about smartphones, users of S60 devices have the widest variety of compatible applications and content to choose from. Nokia has also managed to keep S60 clean and rather easy to use, at the moment being the most user-friendly OS for mobiles. Having said all this, it's no wonder that the popularity of S60-powered handsets is increasing.

"This announcement represents a significant landmark for S60. We believe it inspires further innovation on S60. The open platform gives mobile users more choice and provides a platform upon which new applications and services can be built", said Matti V?nsk?, Vice President, Mobile Software Sales and Marketing, Nokia.

Speaking at the event press conference, Matti V?nsk? said: "We see three key trends affecting the requirements for software platforms. The mobile device is becoming the hub for personal experiences, whether focused on imaging, business, music, navigation or video. People are accessing Web 2.0 services and content with their mobile device. Thirdly, simplicity and intuitiveness of user experience are increasingly important."

The S60 summit was held in Madrid in April and hosted an expo where over 60 demonstrations of the latest and best features and solutions for S60 were showcased.
