As expected, Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress at the 2015 edition of the Oscars, which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood a short while ago, for her amazing performance in “Boyhood,” from director Richard Linklater.

As expected, she delivered a simple and beautiful acceptance speech, similar to those many others she gave at smaller industry award galas, where she also picked up accolades for her work. In case you’re not up to speed with the contenders in this year’s awards season, “Boyhood” stands out, among other things, for having been shot over a period of 12 years with the same cast, which also includes Ethan Hawke.

However, Arquette’s Oscar speech was better because, after listing all the people she wanted to thank for their help, support and unconditional love, she used the platform for a righteous call for gender equality at the work place.

“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights, it’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America,” she said as she was preparing to wrap her moment on stage.

It was this last part that got the most heated reaction from the audience, particularly the ladies. Meryl Streep, who was Arquette’s direct rival in the category, and Jennifer Lopez, sat right next to her, got up for a standing ovation at the words. Their reaction speaks volumes: this speech really struck a chord.
