This was Leo’s fourth nomination, he lost to Matthew McConaughey

We have no idea whether Leonardo DiCaprio is up to speed with the things his fans say about him online but, if he is, he’s probably finding some consolation to losing the Best Actor Oscar in knowing that he’s not alone in his disappointment.

The actor was nominated for his fourth Oscar for his performance in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and, this time, he really campaigned for it, doing the media rounds and giving plenty of interviews.

For a man as media-shy as DiCaprio this can mean only one thing two things: first off, he really wanted that Oscar and secondly, he believed he stood good chances of actually winning it. He didn’t, because Matthew McConaughey won for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Shortly after McConaughey’s name was announced, and he took to the stage to accept his award (but not before hugging it out with Leo, as you will see in the video above), fans were on Twitter lashing out at the voting members of the Academy.

You can find most of their (justified) rants under the hashtag #GiveLeoAnOscar, which might not be the most original name out there, but it should send the right message to the Academy – if the Academy ever bothers to listen to what the fans have to say, that is.

Basically, what the fans are saying is that it’s time for the Academy to recognize DiCaprio’s talent by doing something more than just having him nominated. This is the fourth time he’s going home empty-handed and, fans assume, brokenhearted as well.

The actor was nominated previously for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “The Aviator” and “Blood Diamond.” Should you ever have the curiosity to go a little deeper into this mystery of why the Academy won’t give him an Oscar, you will probably be amused to see how many memes there are on the topic.

Back to the angry fans who are now taking their dissatisfaction online, many of them are choosing to look at the silver lining of this obvious snub, namely that DiCaprio gets even more confirmation of how loved he is by his fans.

Of course, there are also those who are simply too disappointed to think of that yet. “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride,” writes one. “The Wolf of Wall Street but the Goat of the Academy. #LeonardoDiCaprio #PunzForDays #Oscars2014,” adds another, while another fan takes drama to a whole new level, writing “Well, Leo still doesn't have an oscar. I believe my sanity just exploded...”

Fans shouldn’t lose hope though. DiCaprio has been delivering consistently solid performances and he’s already shown the world that he’s in it for the long run, by refusing to do commercial projects and choosing only films that actually mean something to him.

One of these days (i.e. years), the Academy will have no other choice but to finally give him that damned statuette. Meanwhile…
