Gwyneth Paltrow played a washed-out country singer in the movie “Country Strong,” but there was nothing washed-up about her live performance at the Oscars 2011 last night, where she sang “Coming Home.”

Paltrow, an Oscar-winning actress herself, proved last night that she was more than an actress by singing live the song nominated in the Best Original Song category, “Coming Home.”

This marks the first time that Paltrow performs live at one of the biggest events in showbiz, having previously taken to the stage for the Country Music Awards and the Grammys earlier this month.

Still, she was nervous and you could tell, voices online have it. She was introduced by Oscar-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson as “a singing sensation and country music’s new star” and that probably did little in terms of making her feel less stressed.

As for the actual performance, the jury is still out on that one. While many say Gwyneth deserves props for getting up on that stage and singing live in front of millions, others believe she should stick to acting only.

Gawker, for one, is from the latter category, saying last night’s performance proves that Paltrow’s ego simply doesn’t know when to tell her to stop.

“At this point it must be concluded that Gwyneth Paltrow has no grasp of the concept of embarrassment,” a Gawker editor writes on Twitter.

Other media outlets, in return, say that Gwyneth did just fine despite those few hiccups. MTV News, for instance, says the performance was stellar and, therefore, that the star did wonderfully on stage, especially since she must have known all eyes were on her.

“Paltrow, who joked to MTV News on the red carpet that she'd calmed her pre-Oscar nerves with a beer, called the ceremony ‘so, like, freaking serious’ as compared to her previous stints on both the Grammys and the Country Music Awards,” MTV News adds.

Indeed, some of that seriousness translated into more pressure on her to deliver a faultless performance. Whether she succeeded, you be the judge – video is here.
