Oscars hosts switch places: Anne Hathaway and James Franco in drag at the 2011 ceremony

At the Oscars 2011 last night, actress Anne Hathaway went through no less than 8 costume changes, which was to be expected with an awards ceremony of this caliber. What wasn’t expected, though, was to have her and co-host James Franco in drag.

As the video below will confirm, not only did Anne and James switch roles (and clothes) for a short while, but they also did so to the absolute delight of the audience and a giggling Anne.

Before this moment, Anne did a little musical number, in which she mostly complained of how Hugh Jackman wouldn’t sing with her again as he did a couple of years back, as Gawker reports.

Jackman, in the meanwhile, was shown in his seat, laughing out loud at Anne’s jabs on stage.

“Hathaway took a break from flanking Franco to reprise her role as the Oscars’ official random Singer-in-Chief,” Gawker writes.

Random as her little singing number may have been, it still pretty much killed her, critics agree.

“Missing, though, was her duet partner of two years ago, Hugh Jackass – er, Jackman. Oh, also: Franco then appeared in drag,” Gawker writes of the jokes included in the same skit.

Indeed, as Anne finished singing, Franco also popped on the stage. While she was wearing a custom made Lanvin tuxedo, he was wearing Marilyn Monroe’s famous pink dress.

Complete with a blonde wig and plenty of sparkling bracelets, necklace and elbow-long matched gloves, Franco still made a very unconvincing but hilarious Marilyn, as Anne’s giggles can’t but confirm.

“The weird part is, I just got a text message from Charlie Sheen,” Franco said of his get-up, right after putting one hand on his hip and striking a red carpet pose.

He also explained that he had to wear a dress since Anne, his co-host for the evening, wore a tuxedo. All is fair in love and entertainment.
