Not long ago, Oscar Pistorius, nicknamed the Blade Runner, made headlines on account of his being the first double amputee to take part in the Olympics. The sprinter is now back in the spotlight, except that this time all the attention he is getting is by no means one that he might want.

To cut a long story short, early Thursday morning, Oscar Pistorius was apparently taken into custody by police officers in South Africa.

By the looks of it, the sprinter is accused of having shot his girlfriend, 30-year-old Reeva Steenkamp, in the head and in the arm, causing her to die.

Thus, despite the fact that paramedics arrived quite quickly at the scene of the incident, there was not much else left to be done, seeing how Oscar Pistorius supposedly fired several shots at the woman and did not settle for just one.

For the time being, detailed information concerning how it was exactly that this incident took place is yet to be made available to the general public.

Still, rumor has it that Oscar Pistorius somehow mistook the woman for a burglar and only fired at her in self-defense.

Some of the local media even went as far as to assume that Reeve Steenkamp's death was nothing more and nothing less than a Valentine's Day surprise that for one reason or another went terribly wrong, and not a premeditated killing, Daily Mail reports.

According to the same source, a local journalist commented with respect to Oscar Pistorius' now finding himself in police custody as follows:

“It is alleged that he thought his girlfriend, who’d come in to try to surprise him for Valentine's Day, was an intruder. It’s alleged that he shot her in the arm and head.”

Furthermore, “I think what this actually highlights is the level of fear ordinary South Africans have. This is a man who has gone to bed, it’s an innocent surprise from a girlfriend, and the moment he thinks someone is trying to break in he grabs his gun. This has come as a complete surprise for a man who’s considered a national hero.”
