It has been less than two months since paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend several times in his South African home, citing a response to what he thought was a burglary in progress.

Following the media backlash that is accompanying the case, the athlete's family is asking users of social media sites to stop picking on him.

TMZ quotes them speaking about the “disregard that is being shown by some ... for the profound pain that Reeva’s family and friends are going through.”

A spokeswoman for the family is also addressing Twitter users using hashtags such as #Pistorians to bash the memory of Reeva Steenkamp, criticizing the victim in support for the athlete.

“Reeva's family, and everyone who loved her, are constantly in their [the Pistorius family's] prayers,” Anneliese Burgess says in a statement.

According to The Telegraph, Burgess mentions that those “supportive” emails and tweets are often quite disturbing in themselves, adding that the Pistorius family is praying for the Steenkamps.
