An orphaned polar bear cub now owes his life to the staff at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, who rescued him after his mother was shot dead by hunters and nursed him back to health.

Ironically enough, the bear cub was found and brought to the Alaska Zoo by the very same people who had killed his mother, sources say.

Kali, as this bear cub is now called, is believed to be about 3-4 months old. The people in charge of keeping a close eye on him explain that, for the time being, the cub weighs about 18 pounds (roughly 8.2 kilograms).

However, he will soon start putting on weight and getting bigger, which is why the US Fish and Wildlife Service wishes to find a new and permanent home for him as soon as possible.

The staff at the Alaska Zoo are confident that, in about a month's time, Kali will be strong enough to travel to its new residence.

“Before he goes on another long trip, we're going to make sure he's recovered from everything he's been through up to this point,” Bruce Woods, a spokesperson for the US Fish and Wildlife Service wished to emphasize.
