Samsung just announced the launch of an entire new line of optical disc drives that are able to read and write various disc formats starting with the old and venerable CD-ROM and finishing with the latest DVD formats that are so popular nowadays. Among the newly launched drives there are both desktop and mobile computer intended units, as well as units using the legacy Parallel ATA port, while others are built with support for the faster Serial ATA connection.

All in all Samsung launched no less than five DVD burner optical drives as well as two combo units that are built using the latest technologies available in the computer hardware industry while also being environmentally friendly by excluding from the fabrication process harmful materials like lead, mercury and so on. All these optical drives are integrating a number of innovative Samsung technologies that are aimed at increasing the quality of the written optical medium or for assuring the best possible data reading quality.

The new Samsung DVD burners are based on both Parallel and Serial ATA data transferring interfaces and some of them also come with integrated LightScribe technology that allows users to create their own custom CD and DVD labels without needing additional equipment like printers and so on. The use of an automatic ball balancing systems as well as the presence of the Tilt Actuator Compensation technology are reducing the vibrations inside the computer case while at the same time are improving the quality of recording done on imperfectly plane discs.

The presence of the buffer under run protection technology allows users to write CDs and DVDs at higher than normal speeds or when the computer system is under heavy workloads without risking damage to the recorded optical disc, while another technology allows them to seamlessly and easily upgrade the firmware of their units in order to gain support for the newest optical mediums.

While most of the new Samsung optical disc drives units are intended to be used as part of a desktop computer system, the Korean manufacturing company also launched a slim, notebook designed for drive that comes with the features of a combo unit that houses the mechanisms necessary to read DVDs and read and write CDs. As this slim combo unit is aimed at portable computer systems, it is lightweight, as it has only 145 grams, while also integrating buffer under run technology and being compatible with the Parallel ATA interface.
