This is the first time an opera singer performs at the Super Bowl

The announcement that opera soprano Renee Fleming was going to perform the National Anthem at the 2014 Super Bowl came as a surprise to many. That's because it usually is a spot reserved for mainstream pop singers every year, for the last ten years or so.

For example, last year, the spot was filled by R&B singer Alicia Keys, and before that, there were Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson, to name but a few.

So, this year, before the Denver Broncos kick off against the Seattle Seahawks at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N. J., the people in the stands will be serenaded by Fleming.

It has to be mentioned that Grammy Awards-winner Fleming is the first opera singer to ever perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl. However, it's not the first time she sang the “Star Spangled Banner” at a sporting event.

She famously flubbed the lyrics to the anthem during the World Series in 2003 at the Yankee Stadium in New York and had to ad-lib the rest of her performance. Will see how she fares at this year's Super Bowl.
