Good news for Android enthusiasts who are using Opera Mini as their default browser, as developers have just announced that they have released a major update for the application, which brings some major new features and improvements.

What's most important for those of you who are looking to cut mobile data costs is that with the latest version of Opera Mini you will now be able to queue a download for Wi-Fi. This means that you can download larger files when you’re in Wi-Fi range, while on the move.

Here is how it will work. As soon as Opera Mini detects that you want to download a file that’s larger than 15MB, it will immediately ask you whether you wish to download it right away or wait until you are in Wi-Fi range.

From there it’s your choice whether you want to wait and resume the download when your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, or you wish to get the file using your carrier’s network.

Another major improvement would be the addition of HTML5 video support, so Opera Mini users will now have access to more video sites.

Developers have also confirmed that they have introduced the Discover section, which is already available on Opera browser for Windows, Mac and Android, as well as Opera Mini for iOS.

With the new feature, Opera Mini for Android users will be offered the latest top news, entertainment and sports info from anywhere in the world.

Keep in mind though that the new Discover feature is only available in several countries. According to Opera, the Discover feature for the Mini version of its browser is now being tested in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Vietnam, Turkey and United States.

It’s also worth mentioning that Opera Mini for Android users will be able to take advantage of swipe gestures while browsing the news in the Discover section. Obviously, this is only available for those living in the countries mentioned earlier and who can test the new feature.

Opera’s engineers have also confirmed that they have implemented an enhanced installation screen, as well as the option to opt out of Google Analytics. Support for Indonesian locale has been included as well.

Last but not least, developers have announced that various stability and performance issues that have been plaguing Opera Mini for Android for quite some time now have been fixed.

You can now download Opera Mini for Android 7.6 for free via Google Play Store. Keep in mind that the application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 1.5 and up.
