Opera Software is working on the next update to the stable version of its browser, and hit an important milestone for the upcoming version 10.60 refresh. Early adopters can now download and test drive the Release Candidate (RC) development snapshot of Opera 10.62, an update to version 10.61.

Users should however keep in mind that Build 3499 for Windows is not the final release of Opera 10.60.

Despite the RC label, Opera 10.62 is still pre-release software and as such it is best suited to deployment in testing environments but not into production.

“It is about time for an update to our stable branch and hence we have a nice new 10.62 build for you,” revealed Ruari Ødegaard from the Opera Desktop team.

“Since this is a release candidate please let us know if you see any regressions since 10.61 and remember fixes to 10.70 that are missing are not regressions,” Ødegaard added.

At the same time, Opera Software is hard at work on the next version of its browser. Various pre-release development snapshots of Opera 10.70 have been made available for download, but the browser version has still to be wrapped up.

In fact, the Norway-based browser vendor still has to decide on whether it will label the successor of Opera 10.6x as Opera 10.70 or if a different version number will be used instead.

In building Opera 10.70, Opera Software has synchronized the build releases for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The same is not valid for Opera 10.62.

Opera 10.62 “packages have the old non-unified build numbers. However, 10.70 and above will continue to have unified build numbers. Also because this is the 10.6x line we still have PowerPC,” Ødegaard explained.

Ødegaard also enumerated the changes that affect all versions of Opera 10.62, introduced in the RC:

“- Fallback not displayed for Java types when plug-ins disabled)

- Selection jumps while backspacing in rich text editor

- Opera crashes when searching on hotels.com

- More MIME file types and suffixes for compressed tar files

- Not clickable/selectable links/text

- Opera hung when leaving canvas/audio/javascript game

- Hotmail.co.uk should be added to mailproviders.xml

- FastMail domains missing from mailproviders.xml

- Missing images in feed preview (media rss)

- Missing plugin dialog might cause a crash

- Crash after leaving a page with a flash with wmode="transparent"

- Items disappearing from cache

- Bodyless documents crash in accessibility mode

- Fixed some crashes gathered from the automated crashlogging.”
