Opera Software has finally managed to reach the beta stage with the latest version of its, to a degree, popular web browser for Linux. Opera 10.53 Beta 1 has been launched for Linux and FreeBSD, the first release of a somewhat stable build. While Opera 10.5x has been available on Windows for a couple of months, Linux users have been left out. Opera 10.53 Beta 1 brings a lot of interesting updates over the current stable release, Opera 10.10, not the least of which is an almost tenfold increase in JavaScript performance thanks to the new Carakan engine.

New End User License agreement for Opera 10.53 beta for Linux: Opera 10.53 beta is now available for inclusion in software distribution repositories for wide distribution on Linux and FreeBSD operating systems,” the official announcement read.

Linux has always been a priority at Opera, as many people within our own walls are devoted users,” Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder of Opera Software, said. “It was important for us in this release to make alterations to our terms of usage, in order to make Opera even easier to distribute on Linux.

Opera 10.53 Beta 1 is the first step towards a final stable release for Linux and FreeBSD. Most of the fixes in this current build have to do with the brand-new JavaScript engine, but there are other improvements as well. Linux-specific changes include a new End User License Agreement that allows Linux distribution maintainers to include Opera in their repositories.

Fixes in Opera 10.53 Beta 1:

- the Carakan JavaScript engine:  · High CPU load in Google Maps;  · JavaScript eval bug;  · Float produced where integer is expected;  · Array sort throws if argument is not function;  · Evaluating object causes crash;  · Native dispatcher update and nested ifs problem. - Opera core:  · A download dialog when trying to access secure Microsoft Exchange server no longer appears;  · Find in page doesn’t crash anymore if search string starts with a space;  · Font switching no longer fails during printing;  · Added missing TLS 1.2 Client Auth support;  · Fixed DOM crash affecting some Facebook games;  · Google sites are now accessible when TLS 1.1 is disabled.
