OpenProj is an open source solution developed by Projity and designed to be an alternative promising to completely replace Microsoft Project, as well as any other similar products. Once OpenProj will be finalized, it will provide yet another competitor to the Redmond company's Office system. Still, August 7 marks just the date of a beta release of OpenProj, coinciding with the first day of the LinuxWorld in San Francisco. However, in the end, OpenProj will have the potential to rival both the Office family of products as well as the Microsoft Project project-management software, as it is planned to be included into OpenOffice.

"OpenProj is ideal for desktop project management and is available on Linux, Unix, Mac or Windows even opening existing Microsoft or Primavera files. OpenProj shares the industries most advanced scheduling engine with Project-ON-Demand and has Gantt Charts, Network Diagrams (PERT Charts), WBS and RBS charts, Earned Value costing and more. There is literally no time or effort involved in switching to OpenProj and your teams can manage projects in Linux, Unix, Mac or Windows for free. Projity worked closely with leaders in the software and open source industries in preparation for the release of OpenProj. The OpenProj release is a welcome addition not only for project management users but also users in all software segments," reads an excerpt of the OpenProj's description.

From the perspective of an open source, cross platform project-management software, OpenProj has the advantage of the price tag compared to Microsoft Project. "The OpenProj solution is the most advanced project solution ever provided to the open source community. Projity has open sourced the entire OpenProj solution including the most advanced scheduling, resource and cost algorithms in the industry. Projity provides the source code and OpenProj solution free of charge. OpenProj is available for installation on Linux, Unix, Mac or Windows destktops," Projity added.
