OnyX is a general-purpose utility that enables you not only to optimize how the OS X works, but also to manage some of the processes behind most applications. OnyX can manipulate everything from the Finder, Dock, Dashboard, Expose, and Safari to the Login window, and the hidden settings of some of Apple's own applications.

Titanium Software warns of the beta nature of OnyX 2.1b3, and reveals that it has made tons of modifications in this version of OnyX. According to the developer, “They relate to primarily compatibility with Snow Leopard. Now, you can uninstall OnyX from the OnyX menu of the application.” The company urges users to send bug reports directly via email, or post in the forums.

OnyX also allows you to delete caches and remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome, acting as a cleaning utility as well. There's also the option to see detailed info of your configuration and to save a Desktop before modifying and relaunching the Finder. The app also lets you modify its appearance – window transparency, the icon, the toolbar icons, and more.

OnyX is a Universal Binary and works with all PowerPC and Intel computers running Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard). The only Snow Leopard-compatible version is OnyX 2.1b3. The app is available in different forms for Mac OS X 10.4 (OnyX for Tiger), Mac OS X 10.3 (OnyX for Panther) and Mac OS X 10.2 (OnyX for Jaguar). The software must be run from an admin account.

NOTE

OnyX must be run from an admin account, in order to run correctly. It is very important to back up your data before using OnyX. If your computer freezes, don't worry, OnyX cannot destroy the System. If your computer freezes during the verification of the volume, it is a completely normal behavior! Once OnyX is finished checking, control will be returned to you.
