DICE, the developer of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Electronic Arts, its publisher, have announced that they will be outing a new game mode called Onslaught to the first person shooter, introducing full four-player cooperative play for the first time in the history of the series. The new content will be delivered via the Xbox Live service from Microsoft and via the PlayStation Network from Sony but at the moment, the two are not talking about how much it will cost nor about a specific launch date.

DICE is saying that four players can join in to wage war on four multiplayer designed maps, Valparaiso, Atacama Desert, Isla Inocentes and Nelson Bay. Each map will have a different objective and require the four players to work together in specific ways to complete them.

The developers are stating that Atacama Desert will be more vehicular based, while Nelson Bay will be more infantry focused. When Onslaught comes out, DICE will be offering dedicated leaderboards for the new mode, allowing players to check their progress.

When the announcement was made, Patrick Bach, the senior producer at DICE, revealed that “We’re thrilled to bring something new and fresh to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 while still keeping Battlefield’s signature gameplay intact. We want to consistently support the over 4 million fans playing the game with new ways to get into multiplayer and also challenge the elite players with new experiences to improve their performance online. Effective squad play is the key to success in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer and this new mode will provide players with a dedicated environment to test their team skills and rank against the competition.”

As part of a recent conference call with investors, the Chief Executive Officer of Electronic Arts unveiled that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 managed to sell more than 5 million units since it was launched earlier in the year.
