Digital program helps zoos breed animals that face extinction

Finding that “special someone” can be quite tricky. More so if you belong to an endangered species and those of your kind are few and far in between.

However, all thanks to a digital program, zoos throughout the US now find it relatively easy to find proper mates for the animals they have in their care. Apparently, this enabled them to take major steps towards wildlife conservation and saving various species from extinction.

The idea behind this online dating database for animals is quite simple: each specimen has its own description posted in the virtual world (details such as temperament, current location and genetics included), and zoo keepers use these pieces of information to boost local and national breeding programs.

Two river otter pups stand as proof of the success of this match-making system: they were just born at a zoo in Oakland, after their parents first got in touch digitally.
