Trying to resist the urge to play more

The PlayStation 3 is the most powerful console in terms of hardware that is available today on the market. Nobody can dispute that, but sadly, the small number of games, the high price and the advantages of other consoles have stolen a lot of its success. But titles such as Resistance, Uncharted or Metal Gear Solid have shown gamers just what Sony's big black box is capable of, offering some huge and detailed worlds, drawing out all of the console's resources.

We recently got our hands on Resistance 2, the sequel to one of the PS3's launch titles, Resistance: Fall of Man. While I haven't played the first one, after one hour spent with Resistance 2 and Nathan Hale, I was hooked on Insomniac Games' franchise. The game promised to deliver a great experience and to harness the hardware power of the PS3 and that is just what happened. For the full details, here's my one hour spent with Resistance 2.

13:00 Finally, I can play this great game that I've heard a lot of things about, both good and bad, so I need to see for myself if it is worthy of the praise that reviewers gave it.

13:10 What can I say, I'm not a Sony fanboy, but from the opening sequence and first moments of gameplay, Resistance 2 really leaves a lasting impression on you. Running the game on a flatscreen is something mandatory, as you should stop and actually look around to see the details of the different levels in the game.

13:20 Duty calls and it seems that the Chimera have really gotten a foothold in the United States, and are becoming more and more threatening to the fate of the humanity. Nathan is now leader of a group of Sentinels, soldiers specialized in fighting these monsters and who are ready to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of humanity.

13:30 After a few short introductory sequences through an underground laboratory in San Francisco, you are now tasked with escorting a doctor outside so that he can be airlifted out of the war zone. The sequence where you first step outside and see on one side the Golden Gate bridge and on the other big Chimeran ships that are invading the outskirts of the city is simply breathtaking. It is now when you realize the scale of the fight and the power of the PS3.

13:40 There are already a lot of new things different from the first Resistance, new enemies and weapons will certainly make a lot of old players interested and give a great experience to new users. One weapon that will surely make the game a lot easier, if you can get your hands on it, is the Wraith, which can shoot through solid objects and kill enemies that are behind cover. The alternate fire creates a mini-shield around the area that you occupy so a slot should be always reserved for this weapon.

13:50 Nathan, as the altruist that he is, offers to go back for some precious medicine that will help him and the rest of his squad fight the Chimeran virus, which, although it offers them improved reflexes and health, also eats away at their sanity. Now you need to navigate once again through the underground lab.

14:00 You get the medicine but you now come up to a dock beneath the Golden Gate bridge and the water isn't good for a swim to say the least, as a monster called the Kraken wants to make you his dinner. Luckily you have a big enough weapon to make it fried calamari, which is the title of the trophy you will unlock.

All in all, Resistance 2 is a very solid title, one that is a must-buy for a lot of PlayStation 3 and shooter fans. The controls are pretty good and intuitive and, despite the fact that I am a PC gamer, will make you get used to them pretty fast. Look forward to our review in the weeks to come as there are also the co-op and multiplayer modes, which offer some great experiences too.
