WiFi, UWB and NFC

Connecting several wireless technologies and offering the best of each individual standard as a complex and unified solution is what the Bluetooth Special Interest Group is hoping to achieve sometime soon. The technologies that the Group thinks could be included in this project are WiFi, UWB and NFC, which, combined with the great flexibility Bluetooth offers, could take wireless communications to a very different level. The project tries to combine technologies, functionalities and user interfaces of the wireless solutions so that they could be easier to install and use.

Bluetooth is used mostly for short range wireless networks. Very often it is used for connecting wireless headsets to a mobile phone or sending files from a phone to a notebook or other mobile device. WiFi is the standard in wireless networking for laptop computers and home networks.

Near Field Communications (NFC) hasn't had the publicity the first two have, but it could have a very important role if it will be chosen as a reliable solution for instant payments or identification. The technology works by sending a signal over a short distance of a few centimeters. Ultra-wideband (UWB) is an emerging standard that is commonly referred to as 'wireless USB' for its ability to transmit large amounts of data over a distance of up to 10 meters.
