Olympus and Nikon are walking in Sony's footsteps

Last week, a patent revealed that Nikon might be trying to walk in the footsteps of fellow photo maker Sony.

Judging by the discovered documents, it looked like Nikon was prepping a smartphone camera similar to Sony’s QX series.

And as it turns out today, Nikon might not be alone in its quest. As Mirrorless Rumors points out, another patent this time coming from Olympus is describing a similar story.

As you can see in the images, the patent describes attaching a lens-type of camera to a smartphone or tablet device.

Not many details are provided about Olympus’ take on the QX series, but at this point we’re not really sure the cameras will be making it out on the market

Just because a product shows up in a patent, it doesn’t mean it will actually make it to retail. It could just be that the producing company is experimenting with the concept and nothing else. But time will tell if this is the case or not.

In related news, a few months ago it was reported that Sony was looking to refresh its QX series by adding a new shooter with 30x optical zoom.

The current Sony QX100 arrives with 3.6x optical zoom, while the QX10 packs 10x optical zoom lens, so the new model will boost things up considerably.
