Olympus has announced today its latest financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2014, and reached the conclusion that it must focus on the mirrorless camera market.

Following its Olympus OM-D E-M1 market success, Olympus decided that an accelerated shift towards the Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera market would benefit the company on the long term.

The sales for its compact cameras declined by 26.5%, while the MFT mirrorless camera sales dropped only 3%, making the Nippon manufacturer reduce its compact camera inventory by 40% and plan the further expansion of the OM-D series for the second half of the fiscal year.

Compared with the first half of the fiscal year, Olympus managed to reduce its loss for the entire imaging business by 39% to -¥2.7 billion / $27 million.

A decline of the camera sales market has also been reported by Nikon, who recently announced that it would be making cuts regarding its high-end camera sales forecast.
