Wildlife Response Centre is now responsible for the fate of 43 blue penguins and one dotterel, since other 23 have been released in the vicinity of Motiti Island by a team of coastal volunteers.

At this point in time, it seems that the Rena oil spill is making less and less victims, since authorities have to deal with fewer oiled birds, SunLive informs.

Since the cleanup operation is far from being completed, the team will continue monitoring the condition of the released birds while searching for other victims.

During the weekend, the team has managed to save the lives of four other penguins, two from Motiti Island and two located in Mount Maunganui region. The liberated creatures seem excited the temporary captivity is over and are most likely eager to swim freely in their new habitat.
