This has been an interesting month for HTC Thunderbolt owners, as the Taiwanese handset manufacturer confirmed that the Gingerbread update for the Verizon Thunderbolt will be deployed in Q3, and two different versions of the official ROM leaked in the last few days.

The first official Gingerbread ROM leaked on August 17 and was tagged with build number 2.07.605.0.

However, courtesy to the guys over at XDA, Thunderbolt users can now flash a more recent version of Gingerbread, as the build number 2.07.605.1 has just emerged.

This proves that Verizon is closer to launching the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for HTC Thunderbolt, though the carrier has yet to make any official announcements regarding the upcoming release of the update.

After initially stating that the Gingerbread update for the Thunderbolt will be deployed in Q2, Verizon kept quite until recently when an HTC rep confirmed that the update will be rolled out some time in Q3.

“…We will certainly pass along your concerns to the developers at HTC. We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited to announce that the HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q3 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability…”

Users who already flashed the latest Gingerbread ROM, which was leaked in the form of a ROM Update Utility (RUU) reported that their devices work smoothly with no problems whatsoever.

However, it is recommended to back up all data stored on the the smartphone, as the RUU update file will delete everything from the Thunderbolt.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that the ROM will unroot the device, so it is recommended to wait a bit more until is rooted.

According to the latest hearsay, there is also a 2.08.605.3 package in the wild that was never leaked.
