Get free money to spend on Steam or the Oculus Store as a replacement

Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset that became extremely popular on Kickstarter last year, won't see free copies of Doom 3 BFG Edition ship alongside its dev kits as the game won't have support for it until after its release. Instead, developers are offering other rewards such as funds that can be used on Steam or on the Oculus Store.

While Virtual Reality technology has been attempted in video games before, the Oculus Rift, a project that started out on crowdfunding website Kickstarter, has managed to turn the experience into a feasible one for both developers and regular gamers.

The first developer edition versions of the Oculus Rift were supposed to come with a copy of Doom 3 BFG Edition but, apparently, the game won't have full support for the VR tech until after its initial release.

As such, the developers have sent out special emails that explain the situation to their customers, so check out the statement below, via NeoGAF.

"When we launched the Kickstarter campaign, we said we’d bundle a copy of Doom 3 BFG Edition with each development kit as an extra 'Thank you.' Unfortunately, we’ve been informed that Doom 3 BFG Edition will not support the Rift development kit by the time we begin shipping. Since Doom 3 won’t be available, we’d like to try and make it up to you."

Different other bonuses are now being offered, including $20/€20 in Steam Wallet credit that can be used on the digital distribution service or $25/€25 in credit for the Oculus store, which can be used to get t-shirts and other accessories.

A full refund for the initial pledge is also available if customers don't want the bonuses mentioned above.

"You’ll need to choose your new reward by logging into the Oculus Order Manager. You’ll see a new section, Reward Replacement, with instructions on selecting your new reward. Codes for the replacement rewards will be delivered in April. You’ll default to the Oculus Store credit if you don’t make a selection by April 5."

As of yet, it's unclear when Doom 3 BFG will receive its Oculus Rift VR support.
