Developers Obsidian and Red Eagle Games have announced that they are set to collaborate on the creation of new videogames based on the Wheel of Time books written by Robert Jordan.

The two companies are working on titles for the PC, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony. Obsidian has been chosen by Red Eagle to help them on the development process mainly because of the experience they have in creating complex storylines for the titles they have worked on.

Larry Mondragon, who is the Chief Operations Officer for Red Eagle, said that “Although Red Eagle Games is both a game producer and publisher, as a new company, we quickly recognized that we could benefit from supplementing small in-house technical and creative teams with a proven third-party developer.” The company he is part of has been specifically built to create media products based on the Wheel of Time series and they are also collaborating with Universal Pictures on a movie project.

Obsidian is stating that the Wheel of Time books are offering perfect material for a videogame series, with complex characters and epic narrative arcs, which can be translated into exciting experiences for the gamer. Chris Morgan, a writer who has worked on Wanted and on the film adaptation of Gears of War, is also working on the adaptation of Wheel of Time with Red Eagle.

At the moment, Obsidian is working hard on Fallout: New Vegas, which is set to arrive this year, moving the post-apocalyptic role playing game to the City of Sin, where the power is still on and a struggle between three factions is ready to play out. The company is also working on Alpha Protocol, set to be published by SEGA and come out sometime during the summer. Their most interesting past projects include Knights of the Old Republic II and expansions to Neverwinter Nights.
