With all the attention focused around NVIDIA's and AMD's recent announcements, OWC thought it might as well try and offer some variety, so it announced the appearance of a new portable hard disk drive.

Most recently, the consumer base has been largely focused on the several updates that NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices made.

The former, along with its various partners, brought for the powerful GeForce GTX 580 graphics adapter, while the latter published an update on the Fusion architecture.

In fact, AMD not only begun to ship the Ontario and Zacate APUs, but it even outlines the roadmap for 2012, which includes the Krishna and Wichita APUs.

Now, Other World Computing decided to change the tune somewhat by releasing a new portable hard disk drive.

The newcomer is a 750 GB HDD member of the Mercury on-The-Go Pro series and comes in multiple versions, each with different connectivity capabilities.

One of them, priced at $134.99, has only an USB 2.0 connector, while another USB 2.0-enabled drive, which sells for $179.99, also integrates FireWire 400 or FireWire 800.

There is also an USB 3.0 HDD, priced at $149.99, which also has USB 2.0 or FireWire 400 ports, for compatibility with a wide range of PCs.

As for the rest of the specifications, they are quite alike, from the casings measuring 88.9 x 139.7 x 25.4 mm to the platter speeds of 7,200 RPM.

Of course, as is the case with all the other members of the series, the 750 GB drives use an acrylic enclosure.

This casing grants them low noise generation (it is fanless) and a degree of impact-resistance, among other things.

The storage devices also have a MTBF of 1.2 million hours and a buffer memory of 16 MB, plus three-year warranties. The full range is available for order here.
