A breakdown of the firmware versions currently supported by the PwnageTool jailbreak

Assuming the devices have already been pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1, the iPhone 3GS and the second-generation iPod touch have been added to the support list of PwnageTool 3.1.3 released just days ago by the iPhone Dev Team. The hack tool does not support either of the two devices out of the box. Currently, just one device is ruled out by the PwnageTool jailbreak. So, which are the IPSW update / restore files that the PwnageTool does support?

According to the famous team of hackers responsible with the most reliable methods of jailbreaking the iPhone, the third-generation iPod touch is the only device currently not compatible with the PwnageTool jailbreaking method. In other words, the “iPod3,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw” file that Apple pre-installs these devices with cannot be turned into a custom (jailbroken) IPSW file by the PwnageTool application. Whether or not a solution will be available for owners of the Late 2009 iPod touch remains to be seen.

PwnageTool 3.1 was released almost a month ago with support for first-generation iPhones, the iPhone 3G, as well as the first-generation iPod touch. In technical terms, the tool was then able to hack “iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw” (first-gen iPhone), “iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw” (iPhone 3G), and “iPod1,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw” (iPod touch, first generation). No support had been included for iPhone 3GS, or newer iPod touch models at the time.

However, to the delight of newer device owners, the iPhone Dev Team was finally able to pull it off, adding support for the recently introduced iPhone 3GS, as well as the newer, second-generation iPod touch in PwnageTool 3.1.3. Thus, the newest version of the hacking tool now (also) supports “iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw” (iPhone 3GS), and “iPod2,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw” (iPod touch, second generation). “iPod3,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw”  (iPod touch, third generation) remains the single update / restore file currently not supported by the Dev Team’s PwnageTool.
