Whenever a company reaches any sort of milestone, it stands to reason that it would issue an announcement to celebrate, and this is exactly what OCZ just did on the SSD industry.

Nowadays, solid state drives may not really be mainstream, but they are definitely far more widespread and capable of higher capacities and speeds than they were even a year ago.

With their endurance, no noise operation, power efficiency and, most importantly, transfer speeds, it could even be said that they couldn't easily not be successful.

Granted, their prices are still huge compared to those of hard disk drives, something made even more troublesome by the fact that storage capacities are still much lower than what the latter can bring to bear.

Either way, SSDs have been performing well, to the point where OCZ is now in the position of being able to celebrate its 1 millionth model sold.

The storage solutions in OCZ's portfolio have been going to personal computers, mission critical enterprise storage arrays,. High-performance workstations and basically any system that emphasizes data access speed.

For those that want more specifics, the outfit deals in not just SATA drives, but also Fiber Channel, SAS and PCI Express products.

"Solid state drives continue to represent a game-changing technology for both consumers and enterprise clients, and we are proud to achieve this milestone," said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ.

"But most of all, I wanted to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of our loyal customers and partners, without whom this success would not be possible."

NAND Flash chips have been moving up to more advanced manufacturing processes, for better energy efficiency, performance and data density.

All that remains is for prices to really start going lower. Once they reach HDD levels, the capacity gap will end up as the defining factor in determining appeal.
