The update for unlocked handsets is expected to hit UK on March 19

Shortly after Samsung announced the immediate availability of the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Galaxy S II, several carriers started to give more or less specific dates for the upgrade’s release.

While the South-Korean company officially confirmed that the Android 4.0 ICS update would arrive in the UK on March 19, the handset maker also mentioned that this would only be available for unlocked Galaxy S II units.

Even though the upgrade has already started in European countries including Poland, Hungary, Sweden, as well as Korea, Samsung was a bit vague when it comes to various Galaxy S II models and especially those carrier-bounded.

Basically, all carrier-bounded Galaxy S II units are expected to receive the Android 4.0 ICS upgrade at some point, it’s just that Samsung cannot give users specific release dates for these models.

According to Samsung, the availability and scheduling of the update for these specific models may vary by market and mobile network operators’ requirements.

Unfortunately, it appears that carriers that are currently offering the Galaxy S II were caught off guard by Samsung’s announcement and are still keeping silent when it comes to Android 4.0 timetable.

The situation is confusing in the UK as well, where Vodafone informed its customers that they will be getting the update “as quickly as possible.” Two major carriers have yet to announce anything on the matter, Three and Everything Everywhere.

However, the folks over at Electricpig have learned that O2 plans to roll out the Android 4.0 ICS update in mid-April. Even though this is not really an exact release date, at least it is more specific compared to the rest of the carriers in the country.

It appears that the information comes directly from an O2 spokesperson, so it will most likely happen that way unless something else happens.

UPDATE: O2's Communications Executive, Andrew Cocks told TechRadar that he has been informed the Ice Cream Sandwich update for Galaxy S II will be released before the end of March.
