Telefónica O2 Germany announced recently that it planned to perform some upgrades to its HSPA+ network. According to the company, the upgrades would allow it to be able to deliver data download speeds that would top 28Mbps. The mobile phone operator also stated that the new speeds would become available in the second quarter of the ongoing year.

The mobile carrier announced that the network upgrades it planned would debut in Munich, the city where the company's headquarters are situated. The enhancements made to the network are announced to be able to deliver peak download speeds of 28Mbps, yet, taking previous deployments as example, the average speed for downloads is only expected to stay in the 8Mbps area.

The company also stated that the network upgrades would be performed by Huawei. Jaime Smith Basterra, the CEO of Telefónica O2 Germany, stated at the press conference in Barcelona that “Our cooperation with Huawei has set new standards.“ The new peak download speeds the company says it will be able to deliver should make its customers rejoice.

Jaime Smith Basterra also stated that the network enhancements made by O2 were expected to offer the company new ways of dealing with the rapid increase mobile web has registered lately. At the same time, the new technology will also allow the operator to face the challenges that may occur in the future.

Back in April 2008, O2 and Huawei partnered for replacing the company's existing base stations. At the same time, the two companies also announced plans for the construction of more than 8,000 new base stations for GSM and UMTS. The extending move that Huawei is performing for the network should be completed by the time this year ends.

According to the Mobile World subscriber database, the mobile phone carrier had, at the end of September last year, around 14 million customers and accounted for a market share of 13.3 percent.
