Nvidia announced the launch of the new Quadro FX 4700 X2 graphics card, based on the G92GL GPU. The Quadro FX 4700 X2 features quad dual-link TMDS transmitters, which enable it to support a maximum resolution of 3840x2560 pixels across four screens, summing up a total of 15360 x 2560 or 7680 x 5120 pixels. The four monitors can be positioned either next to each other or on top of the other two. With FX 4700 X2, an amazing total of 39 million pixels can be provided by a single graphics card, though the refresh rate rises only to 24 Hz.

The G92GL GPU has been used by the Santa Clara company in some different variations as a base for the Quadro FX 3700, GeForce 8800GT, 8800 GTS 512, as well as the (upcoming) 9800 GTS, 9800 GTX and 9800 GX2. Judging by the announced launch of Quadro FX 4700 X2 and by its features, Nvidia seems to be planning on keeping tight for a long time to its Microsoft-like market share in the workstation market.

The Quadro FX 4700 X2 features two GPUs, both of them having as much as one gigabyte of video memory. That makes a total of 2048 GDDR3 available for this card. No information on the clock speed has been released by Nvidia, yet the 2GB of video RAM should be clocked at 800MHz (1.6GHz effective). Professional simulators have are now enabled to use the four display 3D rendering feature. The Quadro FX 4700 X2 sit on the higher end of Nvidia's workstation card line and leaves home models behind with its multi-monitor support on top of SLI performance boosts available for a single display.

The new Quadro FX 4700 X2 relates to GeForce 9800 X2, as they have the same base, but it rises above 9800 X2 through its professional design. Some connections between FX 4700 X2 and GeForce 7900GX2/7950GX2 and Quadro FX 5500, beside 9800GX2, can also be found, as the same process of incorporating two mid-rage GPUs into a single graphics card has been used.

The GPUs of FX 4700 X2 are cooled in a single slot mode, as in desktop models (8800GT, 8800GTS512, FX3700). Power efficiency is achieved this way, as there are two graphics processors on a single PCI Express slot, though there may be some 3D capabilities slowed down to meet the demands of qualifying process. Only extreme testing can figure the differences between the home and professional models.

The Quadro FX 4700 X2 graphics card is already available, though no references to price have yet been made.
