Microsoft says that it’s building “a list of supported devices right now” and will share info when the preview is ready

There’s no doubt that Windows 10 for phones preview is one of the most eagerly awaited products for Windows Phone fans, but some of them might really be disappointed when the new technical preview comes out for everyone.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, says in a short tweet that the company is now working on a list of supported devices, which means that not all handsets running Windows Phone right now will be able to deploy the technical preview.

There are no details regarding these devices and everyone’s thinking about low-end models, but Microsoft will most likely provide us with a little bit more on this subject when the preview is ready to ship for all users.

Windows 10 for all Windows Phone devices

And yet, such news might be a bit surprising for some, especially after Microsoft’s announcement that Windows 10 would work on all Windows Phone devices.

During the company’s January 21 event in Redmond, Microsoft’s Terry Myerson said that Windows 10 would work on absolutely all Windows Phone models, so it’s kind of surprising that the preview won’t support some of these models.

Microsoft obviously needs to test the preview on every single model running Windows Phone to fix bugs and other issues, so it’s very difficult to figure out a good reason for not offering this early build to all models from the very beginning.

Belfiore also explained that, while all Windows Phones would get Windows 10 when the new operating system becomes available, some might lack a number of features because of their limited hardware capabilities, hinting that devices such as the Lumia 520, which continues to be the number one Windows Phone model on the market, wouldn’t provide you with a full Windows 10 experience.

In other words, the more powerful your device is, the better the Windows 10 experience that you get after updating, so consider upgrading to a flagship model before the new OS comes out.

Right now, your only choices are Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520, at least as far as flagships are concerned, as no other high-end models are expected to see daylight before the fall of 2015.
